Health Nut
Research shows that Pecans will
lower your cholesterol by up to 16.5% in just eight weeks.
The Journal of Nutrition (September 2001) studied cholesterol
levels of two groups of participants. Both groups followed
the American Heart Association's Step I diet, but one group
replaced 20 percent of their daily calories with two ounces
of pecans per day (1lb per week).
Researchers found that the group who ate the pecans lowered
LDL cholesterol by 16.5 percent and increased HDL ("good
cholesterol") by 5.6 percent over a period of eight
weeks. This compared to just 6.7 percent for those who followed
the Step I diet without pecans.
Pecans are good for your heart. Researchers of heart
health have concluded that eating nuts may help protect
against coronary heart disease. "Brown et al. (Paper
presented at Experimental Biology 1999, Washington DC, April
17-21, 1999) studied the effects of nut consumption on recurrence
of myocardial infarction patients enrolled in the Cholesterol
and Recurrent Events (CARE) Study. During 4.2 years of follow-up,
323 nonfatal myocardial infarctions and coronary deaths
were documented. Compared with those who rarely ate nuts
(never or less than once per month), those eating nuts at
least two times per week had significantly lower risk of
recurrent coronary heart disease after adjustment for age,
smoking, and other known coronary heart disease risk factors.
Further adjustment for intakes of saturated fat, fiber,
fruit, and vegetables did not change the results."
